Notes: Jess began working at age 10 in 1924 by delivering milk for Bowman's dairy
in the Napa Valley. In the 1930s Jess went to work for the Napa Purity store. Next he worked for the Mill Valley Purity store — where he married his first wife Merle. He then went to Concord and next to the Dixon Purity store. Since this was the Great Depression time and work was hard to get, he went to where he was sent. Jess was briefly in the U.S. Navy until he received a medical discharge. In the 1940s Jess drove for Greyhound Bus Company. But then he found his true calling — driving a sightseeing bus in San Francisco for Grayline. He greatly enjoyed making people happy through his knowledge and experiences in the City by the Bay. Jess retired in 1976 after 26 years with Grayline. After a 40+ year marriage, his second wife Janeice died in 1983 without children. Jess then moved to Clearlake where he met his third wife Bonnie. Together they enjoyed their shared passion for travel. They visited Australia, Europe, and many destinations across the United States — ultimately finding a winter home in Yuma, Arizona, where they enjoyed the warm weather and camaraderie of many friends. Jess was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Elks (B.P.O.E.), and the American Legion. He attended weekly Elks meetings well into his 80s and would have continued indefinitely if not for his failing health. Jess's greatest gift was his love of family and friends, doing whatever he could to make sure everyone was happy and entertained. Jess passed away at age 91 after having spent the majority of his life in California's Napa, San Francisco, and Lake counties. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
