Notes: Robert was a PFC in the 28th Regiment of the 5th Marine Division.
He was killed in action on the first day of the invasion of Iwo Jima on
19 Feb 1945. The 28th Marine's sector of that island was the
southern tip of Iwo Jima on which was Mount Suribachi. His body was among the 3,257 war dead returned to the Oakland Army Base aboard the Liberty ship U.S.A.T. Walter W. Schwenk. He is buried at Section D Site 220 in the Golden Gate National Cemetery. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
