Frances, 3, was incorrectly labeled "Francis" as a son in the census. Chittlehampton is about 5.2 miles west of South Molton, Devon, England. Son Thomas and daughter Ann were born in Chittlehampton in 1842 and 1845, respectively. In the 1851 English census, James, 41, and Jane, 34, were living in Kings Nympton Parish, South Molton, Devon. James was a farmer. Their children were Frances, 13, Thomas, 9, Ann, 6, William, 4, James, 2, and John, 4 months. In the 1861 English census, James, 52, and Jane, 44, were living in Bishops Nympton Parish, South Molton, Devon. James was a farmer. Their children were Frances, 22, farmers daughter, Thomas, 18, farmers son, Ann, 16, farmers daughter; and William, 14, James, 12, John, 10, and George, 1. In the 1871 English census, James, 61, and Jane, 56, were living in Witheridge, South Molton, Devon. James was farming 271 acres. Their children at home included Fanny, 30, James, 22, John, 20, and George 11. Jane died 23 Jun 1879. In the 1881 English census, James, 69, and now a widow, was living on Rawater Farm, in Witheridge, South Molton, Devon. James was farming 260 acres. His children at home included Fanny, 40, housekeeper, George 21, farmer son, and grandson William, 14. In about 1886 James retired from farming. He died 15 Nov 1893 in Blackpool, South Molton, Devon.
