Notes: David and his wife both were born in Wales and both
spoke Welch as their native language.
David and Elizabeth and their children resided in Newport, Monmouthshire,
Wales from at least 1841 to 1861. In the 1851 Wales Census, David Howells, 42,
and his wife Elizabeth, 39, were living on
10 Club Row, Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales. David was a carpenter.
Their children were Joseph, 11, Leah, 4, and Mary A., 8.
The maiden name of David's wife may have been O'Niel or
Jeffery. This is because (1) O'Niel appears on
Mary Anne's death certificate
and (2) Wilfred Hancock said "she was related to Jefferies, the
prizefighter. Possibly a second or third cousin." Jim
Jefferies' family surname was Jeffery.
