Notes: George Washington Samuels and Edith Swain were married 17 May 1919. The marriage
license was taken out in San Francisco, California on 16 May 1919, and the marriage place
was listed as "Willows". In the 1920 US census, Geo. W., 56, and Edith, 39, were living in Vacaville. He was a fruit farmer working on his own account, and their home was mortgaged. In the 1930 US census, George W., 67, and Edith, 54, were living at 154 Gates Canyon Road, Vacaville. Their farm was valued at $5000, and George was now an employer on the fruit farm. In the 1940 US census, George W., 78, and Edith, 64, now lived on Pleasants Valley Road, Vacaville. They owned their house valued at $3,500. George was no longer working, and had completed 8th grade. Edith was a piano teacher. The photo at the right shows George in Vacaville, California, on 25 Jun 1944. Dan remembers going with Nora to see George in his Vacaville home. George had a number of acres of fruit trees. Dan enjoyed walking around under the trees while searching for Indian arrowheads. In the course of several trips, Dan found many black flint arrowheads. George's land may have once been the site of an Indian campground. Dan remembers George as a large man who usually sat in a big chair. In the 1950 US census, George W., 88, and Edith, 68, were still living on North Lagoon or Pleasant Valley Road, Vacaville. George was no longer able to work, but had supplemental income of $1800. Edith was teaching piano. George died 28 Oct 1957 at age 95, in Vacaville. He was buried 31 Oct 1957 in the Samuels plot, Tulocay Cemetery, Napa. The three photographs show, from left to right, the Samuels family in 1941, George and his daughters circa 1942, and George and Edith circa 1950. | ||||||||||||||||||
