Notes:  Young Sailor Takes Bride   Holtville, California   12 Sep 1918

"Lionel and Bess sprang a surprise on their friends in Holtville when after a trip to the county seat Saturday, September 7, 1918, they announced that they had been married that afternoon.

A very pretty romance unfolded with the joining of these two young people.  Before the war broke out they were schoolmates in the Holtville high school.  When the first cry of Join the Navy was heard young Lionel presented himself to the recruiting station and was sent to the Atlantic coast where he was placed aboard one of the big war ships.  Being transferred to the western division, he secured a furlough and was in Holtville visiting with his parents.  School day friendships were renrwed and Cupid was not to be denied.

Lionel left Wednesday morning, September 11, 1918, for Mare Island (near San Francisco), while his young wife remained in Holtville."

Bess's daughter Viola believed that Bess never divorced Lionel, and that the gold wedding ring that Bess always wore came from Lionel — not Simeon.  Bess told Viola that her first born had died in her arms — presumeably shortly after the child's birth.
