Notes: *Daughter Rachel Schaffer was born in April 1821 to Anna Nancy Schaffer, apparently
out of wedlock with an unknown father. Three years later Jonathan Foust married
Anna Nancy, a young mother with her daughter Rachel Schaffer. We assume that
Rachel was then informally adopted by Jonathan.
In 1839, Jonathan and Anna Nancy Foust with their children left Highland, Ohio, and
moved by team to Indiana and located on the old Foust farm in Salamonie Township,
Huntington County, across the line from Jackson Township, Wells County.
Jonathan had 160 acres of heavily timbered land on which not a tree had been cut,
and he immediately began clearing a space on which to build his cabin. He was
a great worker, and before many years had his farm cleared and improved, and he and
his wife lived to enjoy the fruits of their years of toil.
In 1887, Jonathan was 85 and Anna Nancy was 83 years of age. After passing
through all the hardships and privations incident to pioneer life they were then
surrounded with all the necessary comforts of life, yet living on the old homestead
in Salamonie Township. |
