Notes: Elisha was a 39 years old widower and Mary was 23 years old when they married.
(Elisha's first wife was Mary Catherine's aunt, Mary Messic
Franklin.) Elisha and Mary Catherine married six months after Mary Messic's
death. Their Feb 1867 wedding probably occurred in Kenton County. From the beginning of her married life, Mary Catherine had a very heavy workload with the seven children she inherited from Mary Messic: six boys ranging in age from 7 to 15, and a girl age 5. Mary Catherine gave birth to their first child in Dec 1867. She would bear a total of nine children of her own before their family was completed. Elisha and Mary Catherine moved to Trimble County, Kentucky, by 1870 — where they remained for the rest of their married life. Elisha was a farmer, owning his own farmland in Trimble County. They both lived and worked the farm as did their neighbors, as Trimble was an agrarian county. Later, about 1890, Elisha sold much of his property to his "older" children. The photo above right was taken circa Oct 1900 and shows Elisha and Mary Catherine's four sons then living: Morton Colfax Bird, Thomas Vernon Bird, Elisha Henry Bird, and Ira Walker Bird. The women seated left to right are Mary Messic Bird Bennett, Mary Catherine Franklin Bird (their mother), and Minnesota (Minnie) Bird Turner. Not shown are the three children who predeceased Elisha and Mary Catherine. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
