U.S. 1850 Census, Kentucky, Kenton County, two pages as follows:
- page 169A, 31 Aug 1850, dwelling 564, lines 3 - 9 (John W. Sanders family)
- page 178B, 6 Sep 1850, dwelling 703, lines 27 - 30 (Unknown Bird family) + line 42 (Elam Grizzel).
Caution! Page 178B contains errors as follows:
- Lines 27 to 30 should probably list Sarah Grizzel [Bird] and her three sons:
Elisha Bird, Elam Bird, and Samuel David Lane. However, instead of listing
Sarah, an Unknown Bird is listed as a 31-years-old female head of the
household. Sarah at that time was a 42-years-old divorcee going by the name
Bird. She probably was not at home when the census taker arrived. We do
not know from whom the census taker got his information. He lists Elisha
as age 18, but he was then age 22. He lists Elliun — a reasonable
misunderstanding of Elam. He lists David Bird — a
reasonable alias for Samuel David Lane. The ages listed for Elam and
David are correct — as is the county of residence. I therefore conclude
that this census page probably does cover our Sarah Grizzel and her three sons —
the above errors notwithstanding. This is the only census page
found for an Elam Bird in the 1850 census for Kenton County, Kentucky.
- Line 42 lists Sarah's father, Elam Grizzel. Ancestry.com indexed Elam's age as 46;
however, review of the census page image clearly shows it to be 66.
