Notes: Lewis and Margaret LaPlant (1842-1914) came to Ottawa County, Kansas from Michigan
in 1872. They took up a homestead near Pipe Creek in the Logan Township.
Lewis had been born in Canada and was in the Civil War. Margaret was born in
Wisconsin, and was one-fourth Indian. They brought with them four children,
born in Michigan.
In the 1875 Kansas State census, L. LaPlant, 39, farmer, and his wife M. LaPlant, 34, housewife,
were living in the Pipe Creek P.O. district, Logan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. Their children were
P. LaPlant, 12, laborer, W. LaPlant, 9, P. LaPlant, 8, M. LaPlant, 4, and E. LaPlant, 1, the last
being born in Kansas. The value of personal property was $200.
In the 1880 U.S. census, Logan Twp., the family was enumerated as Lewis Laplant, 45, farmer, Maggie, 40,
keeping house, and Phillip, 15, farm laborer; Willie, 14, Priscilla, 14, and Mollie, 9, attending school; and
Lizzie, 7, Eva, 4, and George, 2.
About 1884, after their last son was born, Lewis left the family and went west as a lumberjack.
Margaret was left to raise her family alone. In the 1885 Kansas State census, Pipe Creek P.O., Margaret
Laplant, 44, is enumerated with Phillip, 21, William, 19, Pricilla, 18, Mollia, 13, Lucy, 12, Eva, 7,
George, 7, and Amos, 1. |
