Notes: In the 1920 U.S. census, Andrew Walen, age 34, and his wife Carrie, 27, were living
in Rogers Twp., Barnes, North Dakota. Andrew was a farmer, renting the farm he
worked on his own account. He had been born in Norway, came to the United STates
in 1901, and was naturalized in 1905. His wife, also born in Norway, had come
to the United States in 1910, and was a naturalized citizen. Their three
children, all born in North Dakota, were Lillian, age 7, William S., 4, and Ingram T.,
10 months. Frank Nulay, 23, a handyman, lived with the family.
Andrew Walen evidently left the family, and died in Montana in 1969. In the 1930
U.S. census, Helena Twp., Griggs, North Dakota, Carrie Wallen, 36, was the housekeeper for
Alfred Hetland, 44, a widower, his children, Signe, 21, Charles, 14, and Anna, 12, and his
brothers Christ, 57, and Rasmus, 46. Alfred and his brothers and oldest son had been
born in Norway. Alfred was farming with the help of his brothers. Carrie's
children included William, 14, Ingram, 10, Marvin, 3, and Caroline, 2.
In the 1940 U.S. census, Carrie Walen, 46, was still the housekeeper for the Hetland family.
The household was headed by Beamon S. Hetland, 56, (Rasmus?), who was farming, and included
his brother Christian, 67. Carrie's children included Ingram, 20, doing farm labor,
Marvin, 13, and Caroline, 12. |
