Notes: Otto E. Retzlaff, born in Iowa on 13 Feb 1876, moved to Cooperstown, Griggs, North Dakota
in 1881 with his parents. In 1905, he married Helena Steffen, daughter of William and
Elizabeth Steffen. They homesteaded near Ray, Williams, North Dakota. Helena died
in 1907 during the childbirth of twins, and only one twin, Helen, survived. Helen went
to live with her maternal grandparents, and Otto moved to Cooperstown.
In the 1910 U.S. census, Otto, 34, was living in a boarding house on Burrell Ave.,
Cooperstown Ward 1. He was the owner/operator of the livery stable. In 1911, he
moved to Jesse, Griggs, North Dakota; he married married Mary Ann McCook in 1914. They
are enumerated in the 1915 Kansas State census, in Tyrol Twp., Griggs, North Dakota.
On 9 Sep 1917, when Otto registered for the World War I draft, they were living in Jessie,
Griggs, North Dakota. He was the elevator manager for the Farmers Merc. & Elevator Co.
He was described as being of medium height and build, with green eyes and black hair.
In the 1920 U.S. census, Otto, 44, and Mary, 45, were living on Dewey Street, Jesse, Tyrol
Twp., Griggs, North Dakota. His daughter Helen, 12, was living with them, as well as
Dave Wilcox, 56, a boarder. Otto was the manager of the Farmers Elevator.
Otto E., 48, Anna, 49, and Helen Retzlaff, 18, and Dave Wilcox, 68, are enumerated together
in the 1925 Kansas census.
In the 1930 U.S. census, Otto, 54. Mary A., 55, and Helen, 22, were again enumerated
in Jesse. Otto was manager of the grain elevator, and they owned their home valued at
$2,000. and had a radio set. Helen was a public school teacher; she married Louis
Abraham LaPlant in 1933.
In the 1940 U.S. census, Otto, 64, and Mary, 65, were still living in Tyrol Township,
and Otto was still manager of the grain elevator. Otto had had 1 year of high
school, and Mary, 2 years.
Otto and Mary moved into Cooperstown in 1949. Otto died in 1952, and Mary died in
1956. Both are buried in the
Cooperstown Cemetery, Cooperstown, Griggs, North Dakota. Otto's first wife
Helena is buried there also. |
