Notes: In the 1910 U.S. census, Albert Hurtig, 46, and his wife Anna Hurtig, 40, were
living in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. Albert had immigrated to the United States from
Sweden in 1868, and was naturalized. Anna had immigrated from Sweden in 1882. Married
for 14 years, Ann had had six children, all of whom were living, all born in Kansas. They
were Earl, 14, John, 12, George, 10, Carl, 8, Leonard, 5, and Jennie, 2. Albert was a farmer,
and owned the farm, free of mortgage.
The 1915 Kansas State census, Sheridan Twp., listed A.J. Hurtig, 52, farmer, and Anna Hurtig, 46,
housewife. Earl, 22, John, 20, and George, 16, were farm hands. Carl, 13, Leonard, 10, and
Jennie, 7, were in school.
The 1920 U.S. census, Sheridan Twp., listed Albert, J. 57, farming and stock raising, and Anna, 50, no
occupation. Earl F., 27, John V., 24, George A., 21, and Carl W., 18, were farming on the home
farm. Leonard H., 15, and Jennie R., 12, were in school.
Albert died 4 Jan 1921. In the 1925 Kansas State census, Sheridan Twp., Anna S., 55, is now widowed
and head of the household.
She was naturalized in 1891, is listed as farmer, and owns the farm with a mortgage. The boys are
Earl F., 32, John V, 29, George A., 26, Carl W., 23, and Leonard, 20, all single, and all still at
home. Jennie R., 17, is in school.
In the 1930 U.S. census, Sheridan Twp., Anna S., 60, is listed occupation none, and her oldest son, Earl F., 37, is
listed as manager of the farm. John V., 34, George A., 32, Carl W. 29, and Leonard H., 26, are all
doing labor on the farm. Jennie R., 22, is listed occupation none. The family had a radio
set.
Anna died 18 May 1939. All members of the family are buried in the
Delphos Cemetery, Delphos, Kansas. |
