Notes: According to family sources, Norman Chisholm McLeod, Jr., was born 27 Dec 1870 in Nova Scotia,
Canada. His wife Mary Louise McKinnon was born 4 Nov 1876, also in Nova Scotia. They were
married 5 May 1903 in El Paso, El Paso, Texas.
In the 1910 U.S. census, the McLeod family was living in Courtland, Cochise,
Arizona. Norman C. McLeod, 39, had immigrated in 1886, and was a naturalized citizen.
He was a carpenter for a copper mine. Mary L. McLeod, 34, had immigrated in 1892.
They had been married for seven years, and Mary had had three children, all of whom were living. The couple
was of Scotch descent, and they were renting their residence.
Their children were Harold B. McLeod, 6, born in Mexico, Daniel A. McLeod, 3, born in Mexico, and Dorothy N. McLeod,
2 months, born in Arizona. The family had returned from Mexico in 1906.
In the 1920 U.S. census, the McLeod family was living at 629 North 5th Avenue, Goldfield, Esmeralda, Nevada.
Norman, 50, was a carpenter for a mine, and Mary was 43. They owned the residence free of mortgage.
The children were Harold B., 15, Daniel M., 13, and Dorothy N., 9. All the children attended school.
All of the immigration dates are one year later then reported in the 1910 census.
In the 1930 U.S. census, the McLeod family was still living in the same residence, valued at $300.
Norman, 59, was still a carpenter for a metal mine, and was 32 at marriage. Mary, 53, was 27 at marriage.
The children at home were Daniel M., 23, a brakeman for a silver railroad, and Dorothy A., 20, no occupation.
Mary died 27 May 1934 in a San Francisco hospital, following an operation.
In the 1940 U.S. census, Norman, 69, now a widower, was employed as a carpenter in the building and construction
industry. He had completed 8th grade, and was living in the same residence, now valued at $1,000. The
only child at home was Daniel A., 33, a mill worker, who was married to Helen M., 18.
Norman died 12 Dec 1947 in Pioche, Lincoln, Nevada. He is buried with his wife in Goldfield Cemetery,
Goldfield, Esmeralda, Nevada. Also buried in the cemetery is their grandson, Donald Bruce McLeod,
son of Harold, killed in an auto accident at age 6. |
