Notes: According to various records, John Nock Hinton was born 18 Oct 1839 in Ashted, Birmington,
Warwickshire, England, to Atkins Hinton and Agnes Maurice. Emma Spendlove was born 29 Jan 1842 in
Cosby, Leicestershire, England to John Spendlove and Elizabeth Harrison. They married 19 May 1861
on board the Underwriter while crossing the Atlantic Ocean to America.
In the 1880 U.S. census, John N. Hinton, 41, and his wife Emma Hinton, 39, were living in Virgin City, Kane*,
Utah. John was a cabinet maker. Their children were John M., 18, carpenter, Agnes, 16, Mayrion,
14, Emma, 12, Morice, 8, Annie, 6, and Bernard, 1. John had been born in Salt Lake
City, Utah. The rest of the children had been born in Virgin City. *The 1880 U.S. census used the
old county line between Kane and Washington counties, placing Virgin in Kane County rather then in Washington
County.
In the 1900 U.S. census, the family was again enumerated in Virgin, Washington, Utah. John N., 60, born
Oct 1839, was now a farmer. A U.S. resident for 39 years, he was a naturalized citizen. Emma, 58,
born Jan 1842, had had ten children, nine of them then living. The children at home included Burnett, 21,
born Jan 1879, a farm laborer, Edith, 19, born Mar 1891, and Catherine, 16, born Apr 1884. Several of Emma's
brothers and their families are enumerated on the same census page.
In the 1910 U.S. census, John N., 70, and Emma S., 68, were living in Hurricane, Washington, Utah. John was
a carpenter, working on houses. Emma had had eleven children, nine of them then living. Also living in
Hurricane were their sons Bernard and Thomas and their families.
In the 1920 U.S. census, John N., 80, and Emma, 78, were still living in Hurricane. John, no occupation, and
his wife were both naturalized citizens, 1879. Their sons Bernard and Thomas, and their families, lived
nearby.
John died 25 Aug 1928 in Hurricane, Washington, Utah. His death certificate
gives hypostatic pneumonia as cause of death, and mechanic as occupation. He is buried in the Hurricane
City Cemetery, Hurricane, Utah. Emma died 5 May 1929 in St. Thomas, Clark, Nevada, the city of residence
of her daughter Edith Gibson. She is buried with her husband in the Hurricane City Cemetery.
