His parents were Jacob August Horst and Johanna Marie Meissner. Verdie Lee Young was born 14 Dec 1883
in Gribble Springs, [a cemetery, road, and church in Denton County have that name], Texas. Her parents
were John Hampton Young and Martha L. Payne. Emil and Verdie were married about 1902 in Texas.
They had a family of eight children.
In the 1920 U.S. census, Emil Horst, 38, and his wife Verdie L. Horst, 36, were living on 2d Street in Sanger,
Denton, Texas. Emil was a butcher and owned his own meat market. They owned their home free of
mortgage. Their children, all born in Texas, were Auther E., 16. Leroy, 14, Edwin E., 11, Julian L., 8,
H.M. 6, Francis F., 4, and Verdie M., 1 yr, 8 months. The oldest three attended school. Also living in
the household was Emil's father Jacob Horst, 59, a widow. Born in Germany, he had immigrated to the
United States in 1876, was a naturalized citizen, and was working as a salesman for the meat market.
Daurthy Louise Horst, their last child, was born 2 Apr 1920 in Sanger, Denton, Texas.
In the 1930 U.S. census, Emil Horst, 48, and Verdie L. Horst, 46, were living North of Street No. 9, in Sanger.
Emil was the proprietor of a meat market. They were renting their house for $15. per month, and had a
radio set. The children at home were Julian L., 18, H.M., 16, Francis F., 14, Verdie M., 11, and Daurthy L.,
9 years. Julian was an apprentice meat cutter, and the rest of the children were in school. Emil's
father Jacob, 69, was living in the household.
By the 1940 U.S. census*, Sanger, most of the family had gone their separate ways. Emil, 58, and his wife,
Verdie, 56, were enumerated with only Daurthy, 20, living at home. Emil was a butcher in a meat market, and
had completed eighth grade. Verdie had completed eighth grade and Dorothy had four years of high school.
In April 1942, Emil Horst, 61, registered for the "old man's registration for the World War II draft.
His address was Box 171 Sanger, and he was owner of the City Market.
Verdie Lee Young Horst died 30 Aug 1961 at home at 703 S. 5th, Sanger. Cause of death was coronary
occlusion. She was buried 1 Sep 1961 in the Sanger Cemetery, Sanger, Denton, Texas. Emil Horst died
27 Jul 1964, at Chapman Hospital, Sanger. Cause of death was coronary occlusion. He was buried 28
Jul 1964 with his wife in Sanger Cemetery.
