In the 1920 U.S. census, Harold was working as a clerk in a bank. By the
1930 U.S. census, he was a "chauffer" in the dry goods industry, meaning he was probably
driving a delivery truck. Harold marrried Esther Kauffman, who grew up in Pennsylvania, sometime between
1931 and 1935. Their only child, a daughter, was born in 1936. In 1937,
Harold was a truck driver driving for the American Oil Company. The family was
living at 307 Perkasie Avenue in West Lawn, a suburb of Reading, Pennsylvania.
In the 1940 U.S. census, the house was reported as owned and worth $4,500.
Harold was a truck driver, and in 1939, he reported an income of $1,320. He had
completed 8th grade. About 1943, Harold went to work for the Railroad Express Agency as a truck driver. He became a platform man for the company the next year. In 1944, after the death of his father, his mother, Dorthea Miller moved into the family home. She died in 1948, following an accidental fall down the stairs. By 1950, he and Esther had moved to 2729 Bellmont Avenue in West Lawn. This is according to the 1950 City Directory. In a personal letter written by Esther, she writes the home address as 2725 Belmont Ave. Harold continued in his job as a platform man. According to family records, Harold died at the age of 53 years on 20 November 1956, in Reading, Pennsylvania. His wife died in 1985. Both are buried in the Saint Johns Cemetery, Wernersville, Berks, Pennsylvania. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
