In the 1915 North Dakota State census and the 1920 U.S. census, Nellie
was living with her family in Mott, Hettinger, North Dakota. In the 1925
North Dakota State census, her sister Vida was no longer living at home. Nellie was visiting in California in the summer of 1929, and the 1930 U.S. census lists her as living with her Aunts Mern and Mary Noble in Alhambra. She attended school that year, and is listed as an office clerk in the insurance business. She was 19 years old. A marginal notation indicates that she may have just been visiting until April 10, 1930. In 1937, Nellie married Gordon J. Carpenter, known as Carp. In the 1940 U.S. census, Nellie and Gordon were living in Amidon, Slope, North Dakota. They had one daughter, age 2. Her husband was a newspaper printer. In the photograph to the left, she is shown with her oldest daughter in North Dakota in 1940. The family moved to Southern California, where two additional children were born. In 1950, Nellie was a registered Republican voter in El Monte, Los Angeles, California. Her husband Gordon died in 1962. Nellie died 9 Feb 1981 in El Monte, California. Memorial services were held 11 Feb 1981 in the Community Church of El Monte, the Rev. Fortunato Castillo officiating. She is buried along with her husband in the San Carlos niches, Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, California. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
