Notes: Matilda Hildebrand was born 31 Oct 1873 in Santa Clara, Utah. Her parents were Charles Hildebrand and Wilhelmina Staheli. Matilda was sometimes known as Tilda, and in later years as Sophie. She had two older sisters, namely Rachel, born in 1869, and Emma, born in 1871. She was followed by Julia, born in 1877, and Dora, born in 1879. In 1879, the family left Utah, unhappy with the Mormon way of life, and traveled to Southern California by wagon, protected by armed guards. In the 1880 USA census, Matilda's family was living at 34 South Wilson Avenue, Alhambra. Her brother Charles was born in 1881, followed by sisters Caroline in 1884, and Alice in 1886. Mathilda can not be found in the 1900 USA census. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Notes: Mathilda married Frank L. Hilton on 19 Oct 1908 probably in Alhambra, California.
They made their home with his widowed mother Sarah at 108 N. Second Street, Alhambra.
The 1915-1916 directory of Alhambra, gave Frank and Matilda's address as 108 Stoneman
Avenue. In the 1920 USA census, Frank's mother was still living, and Frank was
listed as the head of household at the Second Street address. By 1926, they
were living alone at 108 N. Stoneman, Alhambra. They never had children.
In the 1940 USA census, it was reported that Matilda had 1 year of high school. Frank died 15 Jun 1948. Matilda continued to live in their Stoneman Avenue residence, as seen in the 1954, 1956, and 1964 Alhambra directories. According to the California death records, she died in San Diego County on 28 Feb 1970. According to the Social Security Death Index, her last place of residence was Monrovia, California.
