Notes: Johann Georg Staeheli* married Sophia Barbara Haeberli in Amriswil on 17 Jul 1849.
Johann Georg and Sophia had eight children born in Amriswil. These were Wilhelmine,
born 2 Dec 1849, Jakob, born 8 Nov 1850 and died 13 Mar 1851, Elisabetha born 25 Dec 1851,
Johann Georg (George) born 22 May 1854, Maria (Mary) born 1 Oct 1855, Johannes
(John) born 25 May 1857, Sophie, born 15 Jan 1859 and died 1859, and Sophie born 7 Jun
1860. The children were all baptised in the Evangelisch church, Amriswil. On 3 May 1861, George and Sophia, along with Elizabeth, George, Mary, John, and Sophie, left Amriswil for Liverpool. Their oldest daughter Wilhelmina had left the previous year with George's parents, Johann Staeheli, and Elizabeth Thalmann. They set sail on the Monarch of the Sea on 16 May 1861. Their youngest daughter, Sophie, died 28 May 1861, and was buried at sea. They arrived in New York, New York on 19 Jun 1861. A few days later, the Mormon contingent left by train for the outfitting post at Florence, Nebraska (now Omaha). Here they joined the Sixtus E. Johnson Company for the journey across the plains by covered wagon. About 200 individuals and 52 wagons were in the Company when it departed 14 and 15 Jul 1861. They arrived in Salt Lake, Utah ten weeks later, on 27 Sep 1861. Here they joined George's parents and daughter Wilhelmina. George and Sophia's marriage was sealed in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City on 18 Oct 1861. The family left in November 1861, for the 300 mile trip to Santa Clara, arriving between 24 and 28 Nov 1861. The Staheli family moved into the second floor of the Ita Hatch home in the southwest corner of the rock Fort built by Joseph Hamlin. On 26 Dec 1861, George and Sophia's daughter Barbara was born. On that same date, the rain began to fall. "The Great Flood" arrived early in the morning of Friday, 17 January. Sophia, still ill, along with the rest of the children and the baby, had to be rescued as the Fort was swept away. The Fort, town, orchards, and vineyards were entirely gone, and the old settlers along with the Swiss newcomers had to start over. That spring, George became ill with Mountain fever, now recognized as typhoid, and was sick for six weeks. Then Sophia came down with it, still in a weakened condition from childbirth, and died 3 Jun 1862. She is buried in the Santa Clara City Cemetery, Santa Clara, Utah. As George needed someone to help care for the baby, Barbara Meir Bliggenstorpher, a recent widow, moved in to help raise the family. The photograph at right pictures the Staheli sisters as married adults. *The Swiss Marriage and Baptism records use the spelling of Staeheli. George and his family changed to Staheli in America, whereas his father Johannes kept the Staeheli spelling. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
