Notes: William Curtis Noble and Jean MacCluer both attended Occidental College in
Los Angeles. William graduated in 1932 with a B.A. and Jean in 1933 with a B.A.
William went on to get his M.A. at Occidental in 1935. They were married 15
Jun 1935 at the Rose City Presbyterian Church in Portland, Oregon. Her father,
the Rev. Donald William McDowell MacCluer officiated. In 1936, William and Jean were living at 1453 Tamarind Avenue, Los Angeles. In August of 1937, they made their first trip to Europe. They sailed on the Queen Mary from New York to Cherbourg, France, in third class. They traveled by train, visiting France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Belguium, England, Scotland, and Ireland. They returned from Liverpool, England, aboard the T.S.S. Letitia, landing in Quebec, Canada, on 28 Aug 1937. This was the first of many trips to places all over the world. At left they are seen visiting the Taj Mahal in India in 1967. In 1939 Bill and Jean bought a house at 4754 Norwich Street, Los Angeles. This is where they were living when their three children were born. They are not found on the 1940 U.S. census. In 1953 they had a house built in the Holloywood Hills at 14405 Mulholland Drive. It had 1,907 Sq. ft., with 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, and a view of the San Fernando Valley. William was employed by the Los Angeles school district for 30 years, as a teacher and administrator. In the early years of their marriage, Jean was a clerical worker and a cashier. When their youngest child entered first grade, she began a 20 year career as an elementary school teacher. As both of them had school careers, they had summertime freedom that allowed the family to vacation in their family cabin in Rhododendron, Oregon, on the slopes of Mt. Hood. The family is seen at right in 1951 on their way to Oregon. In 1965, Jean and Bill returned to Europe, taking along two of their children. In 1967 they did a semi-tour of the world, adding India and the Middle East to their European itinerary. William died 5 Aug 1968, in Los Angeles County, California. Jean died 15 Feb 1990 in Portland, Oregon. They are interred at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California. | ||||||||||||||||||||
