Notes: Archie Richard McKain (Hap) and Gertrude Marie Smith (Gertie) were married on 26
Aug 1933 in Lexington, Lafayette, Missouri. This was following a five year courtship.
Originally a farmer, Archie was a professional baseball pitcher. When they were married he
was pitching in the minor leagues. He spent six seasons in the major
leagues. This included the Boston Red Sox (1937 - 1938), the Detroit Tigers (1939 - 1941), and
the St. Louis Browns (1941 - 1943). Their first son was born in Cambridge, Massaschusetts,
when Archie was with the Red Sox.
In the 1940 U.S. census, Gertrude, 30, and Archie, 28, with their son Jackie R., 1, are enumerated in
Minneapolis, Ottawa, Kansas. They were living at 515 Concord, the same house as in 1935.
Elizabeth A. Corl, 67, an aunt, was living with the family. Their second son Thomas was born in
1941. Archie retired to their home in Minneapolis, Kansas in 1943. Here he farmed and
did finish carpentry.
Archie died 21 May 1985. Gertrude died 11 Apr 1986. They are buried together in the
Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis, Kansas. Upon their deaths two
sons, five grandchildren, and one great grandchild survived them. |
