How Fast Does It Go?

Four separate timing tests were used to benchmark the speed of A&D.  Each of the tests was run on three representative personal computers and with several different operating systems.  The results are given below:

Measurement:  the number of records that can be sequentially browsed or scanned in one minute.
2 Retrieve all records for and prepare to print a 259-person, 8-generation Descendants report from a smaller family history.  Used the Hancock history that consists of 978 individuals. DOS:  1 second
W31:  2 seconds
DOS:  1 second
W31:  1 second
DOS: <¼ second
OS2: <¼ second
W31: <¼ second
W95: <¼ second
Measurement:  the elapsed time from initiating the request until the start of printing of the first page.
3 Read, sort, and write an alphabetized index of names for a medium-size family history.  Used the Olson history that consists of 1,757 individual names and aliases. DOS:  8 seconds
W31:  8 seconds
DOS:  4 seconds
W31:  5 seconds
DOS:  1 second
OS2:  1 second
W31:  1 second
W95:  1 second
Measurement:  the elapsed time from initiating the request until the completed index is fully written to the hard disk.
4 Read, sort, and write an alphabetized index of names for a very-large family history.  Used the Detweiller history that consists of 9,980 individual names and aliases. DOS:  80 seconds
W31:  80 seconds
DOS:  43 seconds
W31:  48 seconds
DOS:  6 seconds
OS2:  8 seconds
W31:  7 seconds
W95:  7½ seconds
Measurement:  the elapsed time from initiating the request until the completed index is fully written to the hard disk.

Each of the 32 tests was run two or more times to verify the results.  Full-screen display mode was used in the OS/2®, Windows® 3.1, and Windows 95 environments.  The above timings are representative.  Your times may vary due to different hard-disk access speeds and other hardware and software variables.  Windows 98 timings should be identical to those for Windows 95.  Windows NT timings will be slower.
