In the 1920 U.S. census, Robert Whitthorne, Jr., 1, was living with his family at 921 York Street, Vallejo, Sonoma County.  His parents, Robert C., 32, and Edwina, 30, owned their home with a mortgage.  His father was a ship draughtsman, working at the US Navy Shipyard.
His sisters were Edwina C., 8, attending school, and Dora Lee, 6.  Also in the household was his maternal grandmother, Gertrude Triplett, 48.

In the 1930 U.S. census, Robert Whitthorne, 11, was living with his family on Sonoma, Road, Carneros Precinct, Napa County.  His parents, Robert C., 42, and Edwina, 40, owned their farm home and had a radio set.  His father was still a drafstman working on Mare Island.  His sisters were Edwina, 18 and Dora Lee, 16.  All three children were attending school.  Also in the household were Gertrude Triplett, 66, his maternal grandmother and Chas Trudell, 74, a lodger, and a fruit ranch farmer.

According to family members he attended school at the University of Fairbanks, Alaska, in 1934.

In the 1940 U.S. census, Robert Whitthorne, Jr., 21, was living with his sister, Dora Lee Locatell, 26, and her husband, Frank Locatell, 27, and their two sons, Frank, 4, and Lavie, 3.  Their address was a rented home at 1735 Laurel Street, Napa, Napa County.  Robert was a ship fitter helper for the government, had completed 4 years of high school, and earned $1,560 in the last year.  Frank was a furnace salesman.

Robert Campbell Whitthorne, 21, registered for the World War II draft on 16 Oct 1940 in Napa, California.  He was living at 405 Jefferson St., Napa, and listed his mother, Mrs. Edwina Thomas Whitthorne as the person who would always know his address.  She was living at 1327 Oxford St., Berkeley, California.  Robert was working for the U.S. Government at the Mare Island Navy Yard.  He was described as 5'9", 158 lbs., with a light complexion, brown hair and blue eyes.

On February 1, 1941, Robert Whitthorne and Lorraine Williams announced their engagement at a large party given at the Carneros club house in Napa.  In a surprise elopement, they were married 28 May 1941 in Reno, Washoe, Nevada.  They returned to their newly purchased home in the Alta Heights area of Napa.

Robert C. Whitthorne enlisted in the U.S. Army on 16 May 1944 at the Presidio of Monterey, California.  By this time he had two years of college, and was a skilled pattern and model maker (not paper).  His marriage to Lorraine did not last long, and they obtained a Reno divorce in May 1947.  They had one daughter, Gayle. During World War II, he served as a hard-helmut diver for the Navy.  He was discharged 1 May 1946, and returned to the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, where he worked for 30 years.

McClure, 14, and William H. McClure, Louise's children from her prior marriage.  Robert and Louise adopted his 4-year old niece Candace after his sister Dora Lee Whitthorne Locatell died in November 1959.
