Notes: Robert said the following about his early relationship with Edwina:
On Chloe's passing, some mutual interest drew us
together and sooner or later we were dating. Edwina, in the meantime, had
broken up with her boyfriend of long standing and whatever or however we were
drawn closer and closer together. I finally proposed marriage but before
anything happened she came down with what was later diagnosed as tuberculosis
and went to live in Florida with her father, all feeling that the weather in
that area was more conducive to a cure then that of Vallejo. We corresponded, I proposed and was accepted. My folks agreed to take care of Marie and I left for Norfolk, Virginia. In my letters to Edwina I told her of my plans. I was to ask for a transfer from Mare Island to the Norfolk Navy Yard at Portsmouth, Virginia. [After some delays, the request was approved.] Feeling secure, I wrote Edwina, asking her to come to Norfolk where we could be married. I met her in early February 1911 and we married shortly thereafter. In 1922 Robert and Edwina purchased a ranch in Napa, consisting of 13 acres of prunes and pears, and moved their family there. The ranch was six miles from the town of Napa on the Sonoma Road and was pie shaped. It was bordered on the North by the Sonoma Road, on the East by Carneros School property, and on the South by Carneros Creek. Included on the ranch were two cows, a horse, a peacock, a pigeon, some Guinea hens and ducks, and a dog. The family stayed at this ranch about 12 years. Robert wrote: With Mrs. Triplett's and Charley's passing and the girls married and away from the ranch and Bob in school at the University of Fairbanks, Alaska, Edwina and I decided that it was time to give up struggling with the Ranch. Workload at Mare Island was also growing rapidly so we sold out around 1934. I resigned my positions on the School Board and the Mosquito Abatement District and we moved to Berkeley California and I commuted to Mare Island. Following the Pearl Harbor attack, it was essential that Robert and Edwina move to Vallejo so he could be closer to his work at the "Yard". They bought a three-bedroom house and lived there for quite some time. Later, Robert and Edwina moved back to Napa to a house on the Napa River. They had a married life that lasted over 61 years. | ||||||||||||||||
