Notes: Hiram Jackson was born 28 Sep 1817 in Montgomery County, Ohio. He was the first of about
eleven children of James Hiram Jackson and Elizabeth Anna Hooker. When he was about two, the family
moved to Delaware County, Indiana. In 1837, the family moved to Liberty Township, Indiana, being
among the first white settlers. On 1 Aug 1837, Hiram is recorded as the owner of a part of Sec. 15,
Liberty Township, an Indian land patent. After a two year courtship, Hiram Jacksons married Mary A. Logan on 16 Aug 1838 in Wells County, Indiana. Twelve children were born of this union. In the 1840 U.S. census, Hiram Jackson is enumerated living in Wells County (26 North of Range 11 East), Indiana. There was one white male over 20 (Hiram) in agriculture, one white female over 20 (Mary), and one white female under 5 years (Elizabeth). | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
In the 1850 U.S. census, Hiram Jackson, 33, and his wife Mary, 32, were living in Liberty Township, Wells,
Indiana. Hiram was a farmer and his real estate was valued at $2,000. Their children were Samuel,
8, Maryann, 6, Margaret 3, and Joseph L., 1. In the 1860 U.S. census, Hiram Jackson, 42, and Mary A., 41, were living in Liberty Twp., Wells, Post Office Bluffton. Hiram, a farmer, had real estate valued at $3,500. and personal property valued at $700. Their children were Samuel, 17, Mary A., 16, Margaret, 13, Joseph, 11, Nancy, 8, Hiram, 4, and Martha, 1. Hiram Jackson fought on the Union side of the Civil War, in the 97th Regiment, Ohio Infantry. He enlisted 15 Aug 1862 as a Private, and was discharged 5 Jun 1865 as a Sergeant. He appears in the Liberty Twp. tax rolls in 1865, owing $7.05. In the 1870 U.S census, Hiram Jackson, 53, farmer, and Mary, 52, keeping house, were still in Liberty Twp., Wells, Post Office Bluffton. Their real estate was valued at $5,000. and personal property valued at $1,250. Their children at home were Margaret, 23, Hiram, 14, farmer, Martha, 12, and George W. 8. Hiram's wife, Mary Ann, died 27 Apr 1872. Hiram Jackson married Mary J. Osborn took out a Marriage License on 28 Aug 1872, and were married on 29 Aug 1872 by the Wells County Justice. Two children were born of this union. In the 1880 U.S. census, Hiram Jackson, 62, farmer, and Mary J. Jackson, 43, keeping house, were enumerated in Liberty Twp., Wells, Indiana. The children at home were George W., 18, and Belle C. 3. In the 1890 U.S. Census, Veterans Schedule, Hiram Jackson is listed as serving with the 97th Regiment, Ohio, with the notation that he suffered "pneumonia and diarahera in prison from Jan till Aug". In the 1900 U.S. census, Hiram Hackson, 82, and his wife, Mary J., 63, were still in Liberty Twp., Wells. They had been married for 28 years and owned their farm free of mortgage. Enumerated next was their daughter Cora B., her husband Frank H. Gerwig, and their children, Hattie and Harry. In Jan 1902, a large family reunion was held at the Hiram Jackson home in Liberty Center. This was to honor the visit of his daughter Mary Ann McFarren and her husband John. Hiram at this time was 85 years. Another reunion was held in Jul 1908 when Hiram was soon to be 90. He died 4 Aug 1908 in his home in Liberty Twp., Wells, Indiana. Cause of death was a stroke causing paralysis. He is buried in the McFarren Cemetery, Wells, Indiana.
