Henry Edward Samuels Notes:  Henry was born in 1895 in Monticello, California, and was raised there.  He went to school on Blue Mountain and joined the U.S. Army in 1917.  At that time he was described as being of medium height, stout, with blue eyes and brown hair.  See his photo at the left.

Henry served in the U.S. Army's 23rd Engineers, primarily in France, and after the war served in the Occupational Forces in France.  He was discharged in 1919 and returned to Monticello.
Henry Edward Samuels Henry married in 1920 at age 24 in Napa, and continued to reside in Monticello and on a ranch in the valley.  The photo at the right shows Henry circa 1930.  At that time Henry was raising stock grain and was a registered Democrat.

In 1942 Henry at age 46 was 5' 11" tall, weighed 225 pounds, and had blue eyes, brown hair, and a ruddy complexion.  His Monticello residence then had no telephone.  The photo below shows Henry at his ranch circa 1945.

Henry was a trustee of the Monticello Cemetery for a number of years and he assisted in the moving of the cemetary from Monticello to Spanish Flat, a very sad ordeal, required by the creation of Lake Berryessa.  After being a self-employed rancher for 35 years, Henry moved with his wife to St. Helena in 1955 and then retired.

Henry was a member of the Veterans of World War I, American Legion Post 199 of Napa, and the Berryessa Old Timers.  He was a former member of the Napa County Agricultural Board and the Monticello Cemetery Association.  He passed away at age 88 in 1983 at his 9000 Highway 128 home in St. Helena after a short illness.
