Notes:  Frances (Fanny) Gardener was born in 1785 in Warkleigh, Devon, England, 5½ miles (W. S. W.) from South Molton.  She married Robert Hancock on 18 Mar 1804 in St. James Church, Ashreigney, Devon, England.  Fanny was not previously married and resided in Ashreigney Parish, Devon.  Of this marriage ten (10) children were born.

In the 1841 England census, Fanney, 55, and Robert, 60, were living on Blackpool farm, South Molton, Devon.   Robert was a farmer.  Their children at home were William, 20, Betsey, 20, Ann 15, and Francis, 15.  Note, that in this census, each person older than 15 was rounded down by the census taker to the nearest multiple of five (5) years.

Robert died in Feb 1848 and Fanny was the executris of her husband's estate.  In the 1851 England census, Fanny, 67, was living on Blackpool farm, South Molton, Devon.  Blackpool was a farm of 100 acres, and Fanny was an employer.  Living with her was her son William, 34, a farmer.  Working for her was John Lock, 21, a farm worker, Mary Crossman, 19, a house servant, and John Loosmore, 12, a farm worker.

In the 1861 England census, Fanny, 76, was still living on the Blackpool farm, South Molton Devon, but her son William, 43, was now listed as head of the household.  Enumerated with them were three servants:  James Smolden, 14, Anne Smolden, 13, and William Lock. 13.  The two Smoldens were likely the children of Fanny's daughter Ann.

Fanny died 24 Sep 1863 in South Molton, Devon, and is buried in the St. Mary Magdalene Churchyard, South Molton, Devon, alongside her husband.
