Notes: John Doherty Ritchie, or John D., arrived at the Platte-Purchase in 1820 and
settled in Liberty, the county seat of Clay County, Missouri, where he remained for
seven years. He and his father John Ritchie Sr
were amoung the original owners and founders of Liberty. They owned numerous
land sites — including land around the town square — and were original
Platte-Purchase land owners. John D. and John Sr also purchased property on
the Fishing River (Missouri City) of Clay County. In 1828 John D. moved to Buchanan County, Missouri, and entered a fine tract of land in Center Township. One year later in 1829 he married Miss Catherine Yates at Clay County. Land records show that John D. purchased land in 1845 in Buchanan County from John Sr — just before his father's death on 28 Sep 1845. In 1850 John D. and his family resided in Crawford Township of Buchanan County. John gave his occupation as farmer and then valued his real estate holdings at $5,000. In 1870 John D. and his family resided in Center Township of Buchanan County. At age 70 John still was a farmer. He then valued his real estate holdings at $25,000 and his personal property at $2,000. On 15 Dec 1879, John D. passed on at age 78 years, 6 months, and 16 days. His obituary was printed in the St. Joseph Gazette four days later (click for details). John D. and his wife Catherine Yates were are buried together with other family members in the Yates cemetery just east of Faucett in Buchanan County, Missouri. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
