Notes: John was named first for his father John and second
for his mother's maiden name Lane. In 1861, on the day the English census was taken, John's sister Julia Sophia Palmer (age 13) visited their uncle Joseph Palmer's boarding school at Buckland Monachorum parish in Devon, England. At that time John (age 12) and his brother Lewis Edward Palmer (age 9) were both students and resident boarders there. By 1881 John was farming 310 acres of land and employing six laborers and two boys. John's residence consisted of 8 persons: him, his wife and three children, two domestic servants, and one dressmaker. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
