Notes: *In the 1851 and 1871 censuses Betsey's given name is spelled Betsey,
but her name is spelled Betsy in the 1861 census.
In 1861, when the English census was taken, three of John and Betsey's 8
children were away at uncle Joseph's schoolhouse
at Buckland Monachorum parish. Sons John junior
(age 12) and Lewis (age 9) were students and
resident boarders there. Daughter Julia
(age 13) was visiting — and may have enrolled in that school.
Son William Henry in the 1861 census is believed to be the same person as W.B. in the 1871 census.
