Notes: George was an age 27 bachelor farmer and Rose was 20 and a spinster
when they were married by Rev. W. H. Wadell in 1895. |
George and Rose ran the Post Office at Jericho Corner (see the photograph at
the right) from 1905 until that Post Office was closed in 1914.
George was the Postmaster. They sorted, stamped, and bundled the mail and
then took it to a post office situated just East of the Concession 8 railroad
crossing. There an iron arm on the train grabbed the mail bag and dropped
back into position. The Westbound train passed at 2:20 P.M.
and the Eastbound train passed at 2:40 P.M. Often the first
train would be late, and then the Catts had to watch and listen, then quick like a
bunny, switch the mail bag so the East mail wouldn't go West or vice versa.
The postage stamp at the left is one used during the reign of King George V from
1910 until 1936.
George's aunt, Mary Catt Fisher, resided with George
and Rose at their 8th Concession home for the last five years of Mary's life.
Mary's funeral in 1925 was held in George and Rose's home.
George and Rose's marriage lasted for 56½ years. |
