Notes: John was descended from an early American pioneer family. His forefathers
came to Virginia from England and then, as the pioneer spirit again caught them,
succeeding generations moved to Kentucky in the days of Daniel Boone.
In Kentucky the family united by marriage with the Coopers of Massachusetts and
the Smiths of Kentucky.
John and Elizabeth were both born in 1818 near Bowling Green, Warren County,
Kentucky. They later moved to Warren County, Illinois. All seven of
their children were born in Warren County, Illinois — probably all in
Monmouth. Elizabeth and then John died while their children were still
small. The rest of the children's youth was spent under the tender care
of a maiden aunt, Matilda Smith. |
