Notes: Robert said the following about his relationship with Chloe:
I dated Chloe on several occasions and, whatever the chemistry, I fell head over
heels in love. The Spates family, with whom she was related, moved to Seattle
and Chloe left to go with them. We corresponded for some time and she finally
accepted my Proposal. Bill Busboon, who was to be my best man, and I left on
the "Rose City", a Pacific Coast steamship, for Seattle. We had a wonderful
passage up, as Joe O'Rourke ... had once been a Chief Steward on the line and he
has passed the word that we should be taken care of. He was related to Chloe.
Shortly after we arrived we made the necessary formalities of procuring a license.
We each had to take a physical and go through a short waiting period. Finally
the day arrived and we were married. Chloe and
I took our honeymoon back to San Francisco by steamer. On boarding the ship, I
noticed that Chloe had a rather bad cold and was really sick. I let her stay in
bed and on arrival she seemed a lot better. We finally made it to Vallejo and
after a round of parties, Chloe had a relapse. I called the Doctor and after a
few examinations he said that she had a real bad case of Tuberculosis. We rigged
up open air sleeping quarters, which at the time seemed to be the proper thing to do,
but she continued to fail. Chloe, in the meantime was pregnant and probably that
was what kept her alive, for shortly after delivering a daughter, Marie, she passed away.
