Notes: Robert wrote a large and detailed book about his life.
The book is online here. During his early years, Robert lived on an Indian reservation with his parents. He said For the better part of a year, I was tended to by one of the Indian women and carried about in a real Papoose basket, which probably accounts for my apparent stoical disposition. Robert later moved with his parents to Vallejo, California, and was raised and educated there. Robert began working at the Mare Island Naval Yard in June of 1901 as a rivet passer. In his World War I draft registration in June 1917, Robert was described as being of medium build, medium height, grey eyes, and dark hair. Robert, with his family, moved into the Carneros district of Napa early in 1922. From then to about 1934, he commuted to his work at the Mare Island Naval Yard from his ranch in Napa some 20 miles each way, every day. In April 1942 Robert was described as being 55 years old, 5' 6½" tall, weighing 160 pounds with blue eyes, light complexion, and brown hair. Robert was very active in community and civic affairs. He was a co-founder of the Napa County Mosquito Abatement District and was the first President of the Mosquito Abatement Board. Robert was also a board member of the Carneros School District and a one-time president of the Napa High School Board of Education. He was a member of the Napa Business and Professional Mens Club, the federal retired employees group (NARCE), the Napa County Historical Society, and the Napa Lodge No. 832 B.P.O. Elks. Robert was ultimately promoted to the position of Head Ship Design Engineer at Mare Island. He retired in 1948 and died in 1975 at age 88. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
