Notes: Alfred G. Swain and Harriet Catherine Shaw were married in 1865. In the 1870 US census,
Alfred G., 31, and his wife Hattie C., 24, were living in Laramie, Albany, Wyoming Territory. Alfred had
been born in Indiana, and was a bookkeeper for a bank. Hattie had been born in Ohio, and was keeping
house. They had two children, Florena W., 2, and Alfred P., 1, both born in Ohio. Two more children,
Louise and Lincoln, were born in Wyoming Territory before their move to California.
In the 1880 US census, the family was living on Linden in Oakland, Alameda County. Alfred, 40, was a
real estate agent. Hattie, 33, was listed as a house keeper. Their children were Florence, 12,
Alfred 11, Louise, 8, Lincoln 7, Edith, 4, and Luther, 2. The older three were attending school, and the
younger three were still at home.
In the 1900 US census, Alfred G., 61, and Harriet C., 53, were renting a house at 1505 Tenth Avenue, Oakland,
Ward 7. Alfred was a bookeeper. Their children were Florence N., 32, stenographer; Louise E., 28,
stenographer; Lincold G., 26, clerk; Edith, 23; Luther F., 22, cashier stock broker; Normand P. 19, cashier
stock broker; and Ann T., 14, and Alice, 12, both at school. Also in the household was Grant Vanslyck, 31,
a servant.
They have not yet been found in the 1910 US census. Harriet was registered to vote in 1913, living at 741
Madison, San Francisco. She was a housewife and Republican. Both Alfred and Harriet are listed at
this address in the 1915 San Francisco City Directory.
Alfred died after a short illness on 20 Apr 1916 in San Francisco. Internment was 25 Apr 1916 in the
San Francisco National Cemetery, located in the San Francisco Presidio. He had served as a Sergeant in the
Co. E, 5th Regiment, Ohio Infranty from April 1861 to June 1864. Harriet died 7 Nov 1917 in San Francisco,
and is buried beside him. |
