Swain, one of Oakland's pioneer business men, and for many years prominent in commercial and civic life here, died yesterday in San Francisco. For some time since his return from the East on a visit Swain had been making his home across the bay He was a veteran of the Civil War. For many years he was associated with Harry C. Williams, retiring some years ago. Swain was a sergeant in Company E, Fifth Ohio regiment, and served with distinction through the war of rebellion. He was the father of Nan Swain, better known to the public as Ann Tasker, the noted musical comedy star. He and Mrs. Swain had been to New York on a visit to their daughter, returning shortly before the pioneer's last illness. He is survived by a widow, Mrs. Harriet C. Swain, and the following children: Mrs. Florence Schenke, A. F. Swain, Louise, Edith, Luther, Alice, Nana and Lincoln Swain. He was the father of the late Normand P. Swain. Funeral arrangements are being made. | ||||
