Notes: In the 1861 Canada census, John McNaught, born in 1811, and his second wife Margaret,
born in 1889, were living on their farm named
Deerbank in Grey Twp. Huron County. Living with them were his
and their children and a Robert McNaught, relationship unknown. The children
were David, age 21, Thomas, 19, Frances, 17, William, 15, John, 13,
James, 12, Mathilda, 11, Henry, 8, Sarah, 6, and Joseph, 4.
Deerbank consisted of 195 acres of land on lots 30, 31, and 32 in Concession 18.
A two story log was constructed on Lot 32. In 1861, 32 acres of land
was being farmed. They were growing spring wheat, potatoes, and turnips.
They had a few cows and oxen. They also built a framed barn, made of pine.
John McNaught assisted with raising the building funds for the Knox Presbyterian
Church in Monkton, which was dedicated in 1867.
In the 1871 Canada census, the children were listed as Thomas, age 29, bookkeeper,
Fanny, 27, teacher, William, 25, Clerk, Matilda, 22, John, 21, laborer, James, 17,
farmer, Sarah, 15, Henry, 14, and Joseph, 12.
John McNaught died 8 Dec 1873, and his farms were left to his wife Margaret.
In 1880, she divided them among her sons and stepsons. Henry Alexander became
the owner of Lots 31 and 32 of Conc. 18, the majority of Deerbank Farm. In the
1881 Canada census, Henry, age 24, was listed as head of household, which included his
sister Sarah, 26, and his widowed mother Margaret, 62. Margaret lived with
Henry's family until her death on 10 Sep 1889.
John and Margaret are buried in
Knox Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Mitchell, Perth,
Ontario, along with their daughter Sarah. Their daughter Mathilda McPherson
is also buried there. |
