Notes: For want of a better name, this is the Wittnebert Farm. In the 1900 U.S. census,
Henry Wittnebert, Jr. was living with his wife and larger family in the Raritan Twp.,
New Jersey. Henry Jr. and his wife Emma had been married 5 years, and
had a daughter Florence, age 4 years. The household head was Henry Wittnebert,
Sr., a farmer who had immigrated from Germany in 1851 at the age of 26.
Also in the household were Henry Sr.'s sons Otto and Bernard, and daughter Jennie.
Henry, Jr., and Otto were farmers like their father, and Bernard was a butcher.
By the 1910 U.S. census, Henry Sr. had died, and Henry Jr. and Emma were the heads of
household. Their daughter Florence was now 14, and their son Louis was 9 years
old. Living with them was Henry Jr.'s brother Otto and a farm laborer.
The farm was identified as being on Amboy Avenue, and was described as a general farm.
On 12 Sep 1918, when their son Louis registered for the World War I draft, the farm's
mailing address was Rt. 8, #1, Metuchen. In the 1920 U.S. census, the farm was
reported as being on New Brunswick Avenue. (Amboy and New Brunswick Avenues are
continuations of each other.) Louis and Otto were still living and farming with
their parents.
In the 1930 U.S. census, Henry Jr. and Emma were still farming on Amboy Avenue, along
with their son Otto. Louis had married and was living next door to his parents. |
