Notes: In the 1900 U.S. census, Gustav August Gans, 42, and Ulreka Gans, 40, were living in Buckeye
Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. Gus, born 6 Dec 1857 in Germany, was a farmer, and owned his farm.
He had come to the United States in 1885, and was a naturalized citizen. Recca, born
30 Oct 1859 in Germany had come to the United States at the same time. They had been
married 19 years, and she had had 6 children, four of whom were living. These were,
Villa [Willis], 17, born June 1883 in Germany, who was a farm laborer. Their three
younger children had all been born in Kansas, and all were in school. They were Mary,
12, born Dec 1987, Henry, 10, born Oct 1889, and Freddie, 5, born Dec 1894*.
A daughter, Eva, born 7 Dec 1901, died 27 Dec 1901.
In the 1905 Kansas State census, Buckeye Twp., the family was listed as August Gans, 47,
farmer, Reka, 45, housekeeper, Willis, 22, farmer, Marry, 17, housekeeper, Henry, 15,
scholar, and Fred, 9.
In the 1910 U.S. census, Geo, 53, and Reaka, 51, were listed as having been born in
Denmark. Geo was a general farmer. Henry, 20, and Fred, 14, were working on the
family farm.
Ulreka died 26 Sep 1917, and Gustav died 19 Jul 1933. They are buried in the
Greenville Cemetery, Niles, Ottawa, Kansas. Willis,
Fredrick, and Eva are also buried here.
*All other records give the birth year as 1895. |
