Notes: In the 1900 U.S. census, Mason B. Sams, 43, and his wife, Maggie S. Sams, 36, were living in
Culver Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. Mason, born Dec 1856 in Missouri, was a farmer renting
the land. Maggie, born Sep 1863 in Missouri, and had ten children, nine of whom were
living. Their children were Bertie M., 15, born Jul 1884; Sherman B., 14, Nov 1885;
Nancy A., 12, Jan 1888; Lawrence L., 10, Feb 1890; Edna E. 8, Oct 1891; Nora T. 6, Jul 1893;
Elmo M.*, 5, Mar 1895; Lora B., 1, Sep 1898; and Robert W., 3 months, Feb 1900. Bertie
had been born in Missouri, and Nora in Nebraska, but the rest of their children had been
born in Kansas.
In the 1905 Kansas State Census, the entire family is still together in Culver Twp.,
Ottawa. Mason was a farmer, and Sherman, 19, was a teacher. In the 1910 U.S. census,
Mason B., 53, was doing general farming, and owned the land. The rest of the household
included his wife, Maggie S. 46, Anna N. (Nancy), 22, a teacher; Edna E., 18; Nora T.; 16,
John E., 15; Lora B. 11, and Robert W., 10.
By the 1915 Kansas census, M.B. Sams, 58, farmer, and his wife, M.S. Sams, 51, housekeeper,
were heads of a much smaller household. It included John, 20, farmer, Lara, 16, student,
and William, 15, student. In the 1920 U.S. census, Mann B. Sams, 63, was still farming
with his wife, Maggie S., 56. Laura B. was a school teacher, and Robert W., 20, a
student. John J., 24, was farming, and had married. His wife Mable G., 18,
was keeping house.
*In the 1900 U.S. census and the 1905 Kansas State census, John
was listed as Elmo M. Sams. In the 1910 U.S. census, he was listed as John E. Sams.
In the 1915 Kansas State census, his name was John. When he registered for the World War
I draft, he listed himself as John Joe Sams. The 1920 U.S. census lists him as John J.
Sams. |
