Notes: Rolly LeRoy Durst and Louisa May Copping were married 12 May 1896. In the 1900
U.S. census, they were living on their farm in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas.
This was still their home when they celebrated their fifthieth wedding anniversary
in 1946. In the 1900 U.S. census, R.L. (Rolly) Durst, born Oct 1869 in Iowa, and
L.M. (Louisa) Durst, born Feb 1875 in Iowa, had two children. These were Ethel,
born Feb 1897 and Vesta, Jul 1898, both in Kansas. Rolly was a farmer and owned
the farm free of mortgage.
In the 1905 Kansas State census, Rolly, 35, and Louie, 30, had three children.
These were Ethel, 8, Vesta, 6, and Dora, 2. A daughter, Violet, died in infancy in
1901. In the 1910 U.S. census, the completed family included Rolla, 40, Louie, 35,
Ethel, 12, Vesta, 11, Dora, 9, and Lillian, 2.
The 1915 Kansas State census enumerated R.L. Durst, 45, with Louie, 40, Ethel, 18, Vesta, 16,
Dora, 12, and Lillian 7. The 1920 U.S. census enumerated Rolly L., 50, Louisa M., 44,
Dora M., 17, and Vida L., 11. Both Dora and Vesta were no longer at home.
In the 1925 Kansas State census, R.L., 55, and Louie, 50,
had only Lillian, 17, at home. Rolly was a grain farmer. Enumerated adjacent in
the census was their daughter Vesta Smith, 26, her husband Rupert Smith, 26, and grandson
Ivan Smith, 2.
In the 1930 U.S. census, Rolly L., 60, and Louisa, M., 55, were living alone. Rolly
was farming, and they had a radio. Also farming in the Sheridan Twp., were
Rupert and Vesta Smith, and Rupert's parents,
Horace T. and Elizabeth J. Smith.
In the 1940 U.S. census, Rolly, 70, was still farming on his own account. He owned the
farm, and their home was valued at $1600. He had completed eighth grade. Louisa,
65, had also completed eighth grade. Enumerated adjacent were Rupert, 41, and Vesta Smith,
41, with grandchildren Ivan, 17, and Lois, 13.
Rolly died 29 Mar 1948 in Delphos, Ottawa, Kansas. He is buried in the
Delphos Cemetery, Delphos, Kansas. Louisa died in 1967
and is buried with her husband. Four of their children are buried there also. |
