Notes: In the 1925 Kansas State census, Rupert Smith, 26, Vesta Smith, 26, and their son,
Ivan Smith, 2, were living in Sheridan Twp., Ottawa, Kansas. The family was
renting, and Rupert was a grain farmer. Enumerated adjacent to the family were
her parents, R.L. and Louie M. Durst, and nearby, his
parents, Horace T. and Elizabeth J. Smith.
In the 1930 U.S. census, Rupert H., 31, and Vesta M., 31, were still renting, and
owned a radio set. Their children were Ivan D., 7, and Lois J., 3. Rupert
was farming on his own account. Their parents were still on their nearby farms.
In the 1940 U.S. census, Rupert, 42, and Vesta, 41, were still renting, and Rupert was
farming on his own account. [The census reports they were renting for $900 per
month, but this must have been a yearly rental, or the value of the land.] Rolly
had completed the second year of high school, and Vesta had completed four years of
high school. Their children were Ivan, 17, who had completed four years of high
school and was farming, and Lois, 15, who had completed seventh grade. |
