Notes: In the 1900 U.S. census, William Steffen, 43, born in Germany in Jul 1856, and his wife
Elizabeth, 36, born in Indiana, Oct 1836, were living in Clearfield Twp., Griggs, North Dakota.
William was a farmer, had immigrated to the United States in 1875, and was a naturalized citizen.
He owned the farm, with a mortgage. The couple had been married for 21 years and had nine children,
all of whom were then living. The children were Ferdinand, 19, born in Jul 1880, William, 18, Feb 1882,
Lena, 16, Feb 1884, Louisa, 14, May 1886, and Cristens, 12, Aug 1888, all born in Minnesota and
attending school. The younger children were Emma, 7, born in Oct 1892, Edna, 4, Aug 1895, Frieda, 2,
Aug 1897, and Erwin, 1, Jan 1899, all born in North Dakota.
In the 1910 U.S. census, Clearfield Twp., William, 53, and Elizabeth, 46, had eleven children.
Those still living at home were Louisa, 22, Emma, 17, Edna, 14, Frieda, 12, Irwin, 11, Clarence, 9,
and Myrtle, 4. Also in the household were Rexalter Adams, 22, and
Walter Lockner, 22, both farm laborers, Belle Wall, 23, a school teacher, and
Helen Retzlaff, age 2, a granddaughter. William was farming on his own account and owned
the farm free of mortgage.
William died in 1911. In the 1920 U.S. census, Clearfield Twp., Elizabeth, 56, now widowed, was
head of the household, farming on her own account. The children at home were Erwin, 20, and
Clarence, 18, both doing farm labor on the home farm, and Florence, 16, and Myrtle, 13.
In the 1930 U.S. census, Clearfield Twp., Elizabeth 66, was still listed as a general farmer. Only
Clarence, 29, farmer, and Myrtle, 24, remained at home. Elizabeth died in 1942. |
