In the 1916 Canada census of Alberta, John, 44, Bertha, 33, and Vera, 7, were identified as living
in the Golden Centre Municipality, Twp. 29, Range, 6, Meridian 4, of Medicine Hat, Alberta.
Vera was identified as being born in Ontario. John was farming on his own account.
In the Border Crossings: From Canada to the U.S. John Down crossed into the United
States on 21 Nov 1925 at Eastport, Idaho, destination Walnut Creek, California, as a permanent
immigrant. His wife, Bertha Louisa Down, 42, and daughter Vera Dorothy, 16, a student, made
the same crossing on 18 Dec 1925, to join him in Walnut Grove. Their last residence is listed
as Cereal, Alberta. Vera's birthplace is listed as Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
The family returned to Canada. John died in 1944 and Bertha in 1957. They are buried
in the Olds Cemetery, Olds, Calgary Census Division, Alberta, Canada. |
