Notes: In the 1870 U.S. census, George Wadsworth, 42, and his wife Elizabeth, 36, both born in
England, were living in Panaca, Washington, Utah Territory. George was a day laborer, and Elizabeth was
keeping house. James A. Wadsworth, 22, born in England, the son of George from a first relationship, was
also a day laborer. Their own children were Nephie, 14, born in England, and Hannah, 11, George, 9,
David, 8, Joseph, 5, and Joshua, 1, all born in Utah Territory.
In the 1880 U.S. census, Panaca was now in Washington County, Nevada. George, 53, was a farmer, and
Elizabeth, 47, was keeping house. Nephi J., 24, a teamster, was married to Eliza J., 19. The rest of
the children were George W., 19, David, 18, Joshua C., 15, Joseph E., 11, Elizabeth A., 7, Harriet E., 4,
and Benjamin F., 8 months.
The last four are listed as being born in Nevada, not just the last three. Also note that Joseph and
Joshua's names are reversed in the 1870 census. Never enumerated was Willis Arthur, 1871 - 1873.
George died 19 Jan 1898 in Panaca, Lincoln, Nevada. In the 1900 U.S. census, Panaca, Elizabeth, 67, was
now a widow. She had had eleven children, nine of whom were then living, and was a naturalized
citizen. She owned the farm free of mortgage. Her youngest son, Benjamin, 20, a farm laborer,
was living with her.
In the 1910 U.S. census, Panaca, Elizabeth, 77, now had a housefull with grandchildren. Benjamin, 30,
was a teamster for a freight company. He had been married 8 years to his wife, Nora V., 25, born
in Illinois. They had had four children. These were Emma E., 7, William B., 5, Clifford M., 3,
and Arthur J., 1, all born in Nevada except Clifford in Utah.
Elizabeth died 4 Mar 1911 in Panaca. She is buried with her husband in the
Panaca Memorial Park, Panaca, Lincoln, Nevada. |
