Notes: Cleggett and Elizabeth Dockery moved from Kentucky to Indiana in the mid-1920's. The
Evansville (Indiana) City Directory for 1926 lists them living at 106 W. Virginia, and in 1927 at
830 W. Franklin, Evansville. Cleggett was listed as a miner, and then laborer.
In the 1930 U.S. census, Cleggett, 39, and Elizabeth, 33, were living at 816 Grove Street, Evansville, Vanderburgh,
Indiana. They were renting their home for $12. per month, and did not have a radio set. Cleggett was
a laborer in road construction. Their children were Bernice, 15, James, 13, Nell, 11, Leroy, 9, Gilbert, 7,
Margie, 3, and Kenneth, 10 months. All of the children had been born in Kentucky, expect for Margie, who
had been born in Indiana.
From 1933 through 1943, the family is listed at 811 N. 7th Avenue, Evansville. In the 1940 U.S. census,
Cleggett, 49, and Elizabeth 44, were enumerated at 811 N. Seventh Avenue, Evansville. Cleggett had completed
eighth grade, was a laborer for the Vanderburgh County Highway Department, and had earned $1135. in 1939.
Elizabeth had completed fifth grade. They were renting their house for $15. per month. There were
seven children still at home. Jonell, 21, had completed four years of high school, was a saleslady in a
retail department store, and had earned $310. in 1939. Leroy, 19, had completed one year of high school,
was working with the CCC in forestry, and had earned $240. in 1939. Gilbert, 17, had completed one year
of high school, was a machine worker, and had earned $280. in 1939. Margie, 12, had completed sixth grade,
Kenneth 10, third grade, and Edward, 8, second grade. Patricia, 5, was just beginning school.
From 1947 through 1950, Cleggett and Elizabeth are listed in the Evansville City Directory at 1411-D Shanklin
Avenue, Evansville. Cleggett was now a utilityman for the County Highway Department. In 1954 their
address is at 1003 Fulton Avenue, Evansville.
Cleggett died 2 Apr 1956; and Elizabeth died 8 Apr 1976, her last residence in Chandler, Warrick, Indiana.
They are buried in the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Evansville, Indiana. |
