Notes: According to family sources, George Roberton Jackson was born 23 Jan 1881
in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. His parents were Joseph Jackson and Margaret
Roberton. He immigrated to the United States in 1881. He was baptized in the
Church of Latter-day Saints in 1889, and served a mission to New Zealand from June 1901 to
December 1903. Rhoda Beatrice Ruffell was born 23 Dec 1881 in Christchurch,
Canterbury, New Zealand. Her parents were David Ruffell and Emma Percival.
She immigrated to the United States in 1903 or 1904. George Roberton Jackson, 24, married
Rhoda Beatrice Ruffell, 23, on 4 Oct 1905 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah.
They had a family of nine children.
In the 1910 U.S. census, George R. Jackson, 29, and his wife Rhoda B. Jackson, 28, were living
at 430 Eighth East Street, in Ward 1, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. They were renting their
home. George was a bookkeeper and was naturalized. Rhoda had had two children, only
one of them then living. She was Lucy A., age 1, born in 1908. Laverna, born in 1906
had died in 1908. Also in the household was Margaret Buchanan, 70, his widowed
mother.
Bernard Roberton was born in 1910 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah; Della in 1913, and Russell
Henry in 1915, both in Monroe, Sevier, Utah; Lloyd George in 1917, and Maxine in 1919, both in
Sutherland, Millard, Utah. In Sep 1917 when George registered for the World War I draft,
the family was living in Delta, Millard, Utah. George was a farmer, and described as being of
medium height and build, with brown eyes and light brown hair.
In the 1920 U.S. census, George R. Jackson, 38, and his wife Rhoda B. Jackson, 38, were living in
Sutherland, Millard, Utah. They owned their farm, and George was a general farmer with
employees. The children were Lucy A., 11, Bernard R., 10, Della, 7, Russel H., 4, Lloyd G.,
2, and Maxine, 2 months. The older three attended school.
Ruth was born in 1922, and Shirley in 1925, both in Sutherland, Millard, Utah. In Oct 1926,
George was called to the Western States Mission, proselytizing in Colorado until Mar 1927.
In the 1930 U.S. census, George R. Jackson, 48, and his wife Roda B. Jackson, 27, were living
on Southerland Road in Southerland, Millard, Utah. They owned their home, did not have a
radio set, and George was a general farmer. The children at home were Bernard R., 19,
Della, 17, Russell H., 14, Lloyd G., 12, Maxine, 10, Ruth, 8, and Shirley, 5. All but
the youngest attended school.
In the 1940 U.S. census, George R. Jackson, 59, and his wife Rhoda B. Jackson, 58, were living
on their same farm in Sutherland, Millard, Utah. George had two years of high school and
was farming on his own account. The children at home were Russell H., 24, two years of high
school and farming; Lloyd G., 22, one year of college and farming; Ruth, 18, three years of high
school; and Shirley, 15, 8th grade. The daughters were still attending school.
In 1944, Geo. R. and Rhoda B. Jackson were living in Provo, Utah at 370 N 1st West. George
was a custodian for the Fourth Ward Church. In 1952, Geo. R. and Rhoda B. Jackson were
living in Salt Lake City at 648 S. 5th East.
George Roberton Jackson, 75, died 12 Aug 1956 in the L.D.S. Hospital, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake,
Utah. Cause of death was Posterior Myocardial Infarction. He was buried 15 Aug 1956
in the Salt Lake City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Utah. Rhoda Jackson died 20 Feb 1968 in
Delta, Millard, Utah. She was buried 23 Feb 1968 in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. |
