Notes: According to family sources, Robert Abel Arthur was born 12 May 1883 in
Cedar City, Iron, Utah Territority. His parents were Christopher Jones Arthur and
Jane Adamsdon Condie. He had at least three siblings and seven half-siblings.
Mary Florence Sawyer, who went by the name Florence, was born 18 Nov 1879 in Cedar City, Iron,
Utah. Her parents were William Fredrick Sawyer and Eliza Ann McConnell. She had at
least three siblings. Robert Arthur, 23, married Florence Sawyer, 25, on 3 Apr 1906
in Cedar City, Iron, Utah.
Their daughter Marvel Sawyer Arthur was born 19 Oct 1907 in Cedar City, Iron, Utah.
Their son Henry Arthur was born 18 Mar 1911 in Cedar City, Iron, Utah. At the time
of his birth, Robert was listed as a farmer, and Florence as a homekeeper.
In Sep 1918, when Robert Abel Arthur registered for the World War I draft, he was listed
as a laborer, living and working in Cedar City, Iron, Utah. He was described as being
of medium build and height, with light brown hair and blue eyes.
In the 1920 U.S. census, Robert A. Arthur, 36, and his wife Florence S. Arthur were living
on First East Street, Cedar City, Iron, Utah. His mother Jane C. Arthur, 61, was listed as
head of the household. Widowed, she owned the house free of mortgage. Robert was a
pool hall keeper. The children were Marvel, 12, attending school, and De Von, 8.
In 1929, Robt. A. Arthur and his wife Florence are listed in the Salt Lake City, Utah, City
Directory as living at 43 Kimball Apts., Salt Lake City. Listed with them were Marvel,
a steno for McDonald's, and Dee, a student. [McDonald's was probably the J.C.
Mc Donald Chocolate Co.]
In the 1930 U.S. census, Robert Arthur, 44, and his wife Florence Arthur, 43, were living on
First East Street, Cedar City, Iron, Utah. Robert was the manager of a pool hall.
They owned their residence, valued at $4,000. Listed with them are Marvel, 21, and
Dee, 18. In the same 1930 U.S. census, Marvel, 21, and Dee, 19, are listed living
at 234 East 1st South, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah. Marvel was a stenographer for
a smelting and refining company, and Dee was a bookkeeper for an oil company. Their
rent was $35. a month, and they had a lodger, Opal Onock, 20, also a stenographer.
Robert and Florence Arthur are not found in the 1940 U.S. census. Both Marvel and Dee
have each married. In 1942 Robert A. Arthur, 58, registered in the World War II 'old man's
registration. He and his wife Florence were living at 153 N. 1st E., Cedar City, Utah.
Robert was self employed. He was described as 5'11", 148 lbs., with brown hair, brown eyes
and ruddy complexion.
Florence Sawyer Arthur, 78, died 31 Dec 1957 in Cedar City, Iron, Utah. Cause of death
was a coronary occlusion, preceeded by five years of vascular heart disease. She was
buried 2 Jan 1958 in the Cedar City Cemetery, Cedar City, Utah.
Robert A. Arthur, 79, died 25 Jan 1963 at the Valley View Medical Center, Cedar City, Iron,
Utah. Cause of death was an acute myocardial infarction, with arteriosclerotic heart
disease. He was buried 28 Jan 1963 with his wife in the Cedar City Cemetery. |
