Notes: Alfonso Martin Perez was born 2 Jan 1910 in San Gabriel, Los Angeles,
California. His parents were Jose P. Perez (1877 - 1931) and Isabel V. Perez
(1885 - 1956).
In the 1920 U.S. census, Alfonso was living with his family at 510 Pearl Avenue, San Gabriel,
California. It was a 1 bed, 1.0 bath, 688 sq ft. home, built in 1910. His father
Jose Perez, 43, a farm worker, and mother Isabel, 33, owned
their home free of mortgage. The children were Joe, 16, a farm worker, Margaret, 14,
Jesus, 11, Alfonzo, 10, and Josephine, 8. The younger four children all attended
school. All members of the family had been born in California.
In the 1930 U.S. census, Alfonso and his family were still living at 510 Pearl Avenue.
His father Joe, 54, a ranch laborer, and mother Isabel, 44, owned the residence valued at
$1800. The children were Joe, 27, a ranch laborer, Alfonso, 20, a nursery gardener,
Josephine, 18, and Andrew, 9, attending school. Also in the household were three
grandchildren - Charlie Valensuela, 7, attending school, Ruth Hernandez, 5, and Virginia
Salas, 7 months.
Jose P. Perez died in 1931. In the 1940 U.S. census, Isabel Perez, 55, a widow, was
still living in the same house, now valued at $300. She had obtained an 8th grade
education. The only child at home was Andrew, 19, who had completed 2 years of high
school and was a laborer. Isabel died in 1956, and is buried with her husband in
the San Gabriel Mission Cemetery, San Gabriel, Los Angeles, California.
Mary Ortega was born 29 Feb 1912 in Torreon, Cohuila, Mexico. Her parents were
Pedro Ortega (1892 - 1980) and Isabel Robles.
Mary immigrated to the United States on 20 Aug 20 Aug 1921, arriving on foot at El Paso,
Texas. In the 1920 U.S. census, Mary was living with her family at 523 Mission Drive,
San Gabriel, Los Angeles, California. Her father Pedro Ortega, 38, was a common
laborer. He had a young wife, Luz Ortega, 25. The family owned their residence
valued at $3,300. and had a radio set. The children were Maria, 18, working as a
housekeeper for a private family, and Pedro, 14, born in California, and attending school.
Spanish was the household language.
Alfonso Perez and Mary Ortega were married on 22 Apr 1930 in San Gabriel, Los Angeles,
California. They had a family of four children. Their first daughter
Gloria Marie was born 5 Sep 1930 in Los Angeles County, California. She was
followed by daughters Rosita and Dolores.
The family made their home in San Gabriel, Los Angeles, California. In 1937, Alfonso
and Mary were living with his mother at 518 Pearl Avenue; Alfonso was a laborer.
In the 1940 U.S. census, Alfonso (Al), 30, and his wife Mary, 28, were living at 715 E. Grand,
San Gabriel, Los Angeles, California. They were living in the same place as in 1935,
and their monthly rent was $30. Alfonso had completed two years of high school, was
a carpenters helper in the building industry, and had earned $643. in the prior year.
Mary had completed 6th grade. Their children were Gloria, 9, 3rd grade; Rosie, 8, 1st
grade; and Dolores, 6.
From 1939 through 1943 they are listed in the City Directory at 715 E. Grand Avenue;
Alfonso was variously a laborer or bricklayer. The couple had one more child, a son
Albert, born two decades after their daughters.
On 25 Apr 1957, Mary Perez (nee: Ortega) filed a
Petition for Naturalization with the U.S. District Court, Southern District of
California. She was 45 years old and described
as 5 feet, 1 inch, 135 pounds, with medium complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. At the
time, she and Alfonso were living at 7733 E. Glendon Way, S. San Gabriel. Only their
son Albert was living with them.
In 1971 they are listed in the City Directory at 123 W. Glendon Way; Alfonso was a
gardener.
Alfonso M. Perez died in Jul 1974, his last residence being San Gabriel. Mary
Perez died 4 Mar 1999. Their burial place is unknown. |
